239/240 - Wednesday afternoon

Despite having been raised in New England, Elizabeth didn't really like snow. It was fine for skiing, say, but she was quite happy staying inside in the warmth and watching the snow from her window.

One might accuse her of hiding, but she'd prefer to call it strategic concealment.

"Yeah, yeah," said Lorne. "So we can't send you a cake from here, which is a shame, because the botanists think we've got a line on something kinda like chocolate."

"Apparently I have cake, but thank you anyway," said Elizabeth.

Laura nudged Lorne with her hip. "So wish the woman a happy birthday already," she hissed.

Lorne swatted at her. "I was just getting to that point," he exclaimed.

Laura snickered. "Then do it," she said. "Y'know, Dr. Weir, how do you deal with these guys all day every day?"

"You know, you'd be better off asking the other me that," said Elizabeth mildly. "I just have to deal with teenagers now, although sometimes I can't see the difference."

"Look who's being tactless now," muttered Lorne.

Laura just elbowed him -- hard.

"Yes, yes, you're both adorably childish," said Rodney. "Don't you have mission reports to write or something?"

"Unlike some astrophysicists I could name," said Lorne, one hand over his side. "Jeez, Cadman, you want a file to sharpen that elbow with?"

"Baby," said Laura.

"All right," said Radek. "I am sure Elizabeth does not want to hear the two of you bickering like children on her birthday."

"Thank you, Radek," said Elizabeth quietly.

Radek smiled apologetically at her. "I am only sorry we cannot do more than we have. But perhaps we could talk more often?"

"Yes, yes, I--" stared Rodney. Radek glared at him. "All right, Radek and I have been working on some, ah, protocols for irregular dial-ins to Earth."

"That would be nice," said Elizabeth, smiling slightly.

"Power protocols are fine, and we can set up for the occasional call without letting Elizabeth or Sheppard know," said Rodney.

Laura kicked him in the shin. She tried for subtlety.

Elizabeth's eyes widened slightly. "They don't know that you're doing this?" she asked. "How are you distracting them?"

"Ow! Hey!" Rodney was leaning back against a wall, clutching his shin. "You kicked me!"

"You deserved it," said Laura.

"Baby," said Lorne.

Carson looked hesitant. "I think they're in a meeting," he said.

"Oh, okay. That would explain it," said Elizabeth. "I wouldn't want you guys to get into trouble over this."

"Oh, I wouldn't worry about that. They're pretty distracted with each other," said Rodney. "Carson could you take a look at this for me? I think she broke my leg."

"I'm sure she didn't, Rodney," said Carson calmly.

Janet flipped a page in her magazine casually. Distracted with each other? She very carefully didn't look over at Elizabeth.

"Of course she did!" exclaimed Rodney. "She's a Marine. She's wearing those boots! She broke my shin! I can't put any weight on it."

"I didn't kick you that hard!" exclaimed Laura.

"You did so!" yelped Rodney. "You did! And when Sheppard's done with his date, I'm going to tell him he needs to put you on report, or whatever the American military does!"

Radek cursed in Czech.
