239/240 - Wednesday afternoon

Despite having been raised in New England, Elizabeth didn't really like snow. It was fine for skiing, say, but she was quite happy staying inside in the warmth and watching the snow from her window.

One might accuse her of hiding, but she'd prefer to call it strategic concealment.

"So," repeated Elizabeth, leaning back on the bed.

Janet turned on her side to face Elizabeth. "How are you doing?" she asked.

"I'm doing good. How you doing?" replied Elizabeth lightly.

"I'm just fine," said Janet. "I'm wondering about you, though."

"Why's that?" asked Elizabeth.

"Because Rodney McKay can't keep his big mouth shut," said Janet, rolling her eyes at him.

"Yeah, I knew he couldn't," said Elizabeth, still far too lightly.

"If you don't want to talk about it, I'll start asking questions," said Janet.

"Talk about what?"

"About the fact that the other Elizabeth and John are apparently together," said Janet.

Elizabeth flinched very slightly. "Why would I want to talk about that?" she asked, her voice controlled.

"Because I know how you feel about him," said Janet.

"That's impressive, considering I'm not even sure how I feel about him," said Elizabeth.

"Fine, I'm making assumptions based on what you've said and how I've behaved in the past with...other people," said Janet. "But if you're going to say you're not affected by what you heard, frankly, honey, I wouldn't believe it."

Elizabeth sighed, rubbing her hand across her face. "Of course I'm affected by what I heard," she said tiredly.

"Then talk to me," said Janet. "Please."

"I.... I honestly don't know what to say," admitted Elizabeth, dropping her head down onto the bed.

"I'm sorry. I really am, honey," said Janet. She reached out tentatively to put a hand on Elizabeth's back. "This just doesn't seem very easy for you."

Elizabeth shifted towards Janet slightly. "It's not. But it is.I don't know what it is."

Janet stroked her fingertips lightly down Elizabeth's back. "All right," said Janet. "Do you know what it isn't?"

"No," said Elizabeth unhelpfully, relaxing slightly under Janet's touch.

"What can you tell me," said Janet softly, her fingertips still gliding along Elizabeth's back as she shifted closer. "Anything?"

Elizabeth sighed. "I love you?" she suggested.

"I knew that," said Janet, chuckling. "I've never doubted it."
