239/240 - Friday evening

Elizabeth returned to her room happily ladden down with books. Lots and lots of books.

She'd also grabbed the post on the way up, and idly wondered what Janet had ordered from Logitech. She dropped the box on the bed and moved to the bookshelves, ready to reorder them.

Janet unlocked the door, second mocha from the Perk in hand, and smiled when she saw Liz. "Hey. Get anything interesting at the book fair?"

"Books?" Elizabeth suggested innocently from where she was seated on the floor. She leant back on her hands, and grinned. "Hey."

"That's what I figured," said Janet, sticking her tongue out at Liz. "Any interesting books, then?" She came over to sit down near Liz, leaning forward, mocha in hand.

"Some which are very interesting to me, but less so to you," Elizabeth said, scooting along the floor towards Janet. Totally not eying her mocha. "I also got To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye and The Bostonians, amongst others."

"Oh, God, you bought books on diplomacy and politics, didn't you?" she asked, then followed the direction of Liz's glance. "Mine," she said, taking another drink of her mocha and not-so-coincidentally moving it farther away from Liz.

Elizabeth looked shifty. "Maybe?" she admitted. She pouted. "I'll trade you for a mouthful?"

"Of course you did. I stopped by to get my credit card before I went to find science books." She eyed Liz's mouth and smiled slowly. "What will you trade me?"

"I didn't even go to the science section. But I did think of you as I passed it," Elizabeth said, grinning. She licked her lips. "What do you want?"

"I wouldn't have expected you to. Were there at least a lot of books in it?" asked Janet. She tilted her head and studied Liz. "A kiss?"

"There looked to be, yes," Elizabeth nodded. She grinned and leant forward. "I think I can manage that," she said, pressing her lips gently against Janet's.

"Then I'm set," said Janet. "Then I think I can share," she said, holding her cup out to Liz.

Elizabeth grinned gleefully as she took the cup and had a mouthful. "I greatly approve of kisses for cofee, y'know," she said, handing the cup back.

"I think I got the better part of the bargain," said Janet, smiling. "So how has your day been?"

Elizabeth just smiled back at her. "There have been books, so it has been good. And now there will hopefully be more kisses, so it's looking even better. How about your day?"

"Better than yesterday was," Janet said. "I saw Veronica at the Perk, and we had coffee, and I ran into Cally, and she and I haven't seen each other in ages."

"That's good," Elizabeth said, nodding. "Both that your day's better than yesterday and seeing people."

"So what have you been doing all week?" asked Janet. "I feel weird, I've barely seen you."

"A critical look at how the US fails to learn from past mistakes in a military setting," Elizabeth said, grinning slightly sheepishly. "The other me suggested that if I wasn't feeling that the academics were giving me enough of a challenge then I should turn my attention to journal articles."

"You've been writing journal articles trashing the US military?" asked Janet, raising one eyebrow. "The other you is perceptive, though. Why do you think I have my notebook of genetic research, after all?"

"Not the military as a whole," Elizabeth said, looking at Janet with wide, puppy dog eyes. "Just the idiots at the top. I specifically distinguish between the two."

"I didn't think you'd be ridiculous enough to trash the military as a whole. Jack and Uncle George are going to be annoyed with you and her for that, though." She nodded. "I should hope you do, considering everything you've been through."

Elizabeth shrugged. "They knew what I was doing before I was hired by the president," she said. "I don't let my personal relations get in the way; I never have. It's a field of expertise and one that will get published in the current world situation."

"You don't think I'm upset, do you?" asked Janet.

Elizabeth bit her lip and looked across at Janet shyly. "I wasn't too sure," she admitted.

"Of course I'm not," said Janet, reaching over to hug Liz. "I know we don't generally agree about the military, hon, but just because I disagree doesn't mean you don't make some very good points."
